Photographing birds and other wildlife is very popular in places like Sanibel Island in Florida.  It also should be very popular in Northern Minnesota.  We are fortunate to live on a small lake, Bowman Lake, which is connected to the Cloquet River.  This is a marvelous area for canoeing, kayaking and, on our area of the river, pontoon boating.  This evening we went out for a one hour ride and saw a variety of birds, a white tail deer, an uncooperative river otter, canadian geese and what we hoped to see two Great Blue Herons.

I was using a Nikon D200 camera with a 200-400 lens.  This lens has the benefit of vibration reduction designed for either dry land or on a boat.  There is always something interesting going on.  You need to be outside and to be ready to capture the moment.
